Mattis Lab – Dissecting the circuit mechanisms of epilepsy

Our long-term goal is to develop new epilepsy treatments that are rationally designed to target precise circuit elements. We investigate how neuronal circuits are dysfunctional in epilepsy, and how these circuits can be modified to improve seizures.

The Mattis Lab is located in the Ann Arbor campus of the University of Michigan. We are affiliated with the Department of Neurology and with the Michigan Neuroscience Institute (MNI). The lab was founded June 2022, and we have already built a vibrant and productive lab community!

Our research combines slice and in vivo electrophysiology, optogenetics, chemogenetics, and imaging techniques (2-photon and fiber photometry) in preclinical experimental models of epilepsy. We use this approach to study

Mar 01, 2023 - Krystal officially joins the lab
We are thrilled to welcome Krystal M. Santiago-Colón as the lab's first official graduate student! Krystal graduated from the University of Puerto Rico, Cayey Campus with a B.S. in Biology in 2022. She is a student in the Program in Biomedical Sciences (PIBS) and the Department of Pharmacology. Krystal will be jointly mentored by Dr. Lori Isom, Chair of the Department of Pharmacology.

Feb 28, 2023 - Setting up an automated fluorescent microscope + stereology system!
Today our new automated Nikon fluorescent microscope was installed! We'll be using this alongside a MBF Biosciences software for stereology. So excited to start taking pictures on this microscope!

Feb 27, 2023 - Julia will be joining the NGP at UofM next year!

Slice electrophysiology is happening in the Mattis lab! And in just a few weeks we'll be able to move over onto our very own rig.
