Mattis Lab – Dissecting the circuit mechanisms of epilepsy

Our long-term goal is to develop new epilepsy treatments that are rationally designed to target precise circuit elements. We investigate how neuronal circuits are dysfunctional in epilepsy, and how these circuits can be modified to improve seizures.

The Mattis Lab is located in the Ann Arbor campus of the University of Michigan. We are affiliated with the Department of Neurology and with the Michigan Neuroscience Institute (MNI). The lab was founded June 2022, and we have already built a vibrant and productive lab community!

Research

Our research combines slice and in vivo electrophysiology, optogenetics, chemogenetics, and imaging techniques (2-photon and fiber photometry) in preclinical experimental models of epilepsy. We use this approach to study

Meiling was awarded a gift provided by Drs. Mary (Heng) Jessel and Peter Jessel in honor of the memory of Dr. Thomas Heng, Dr. Mary Jessel's late father. We are excited to welcome Ruitao to the lab! He is a junior at UofM and plans to pursue a PhD upon graduation. Ruitao will be working with Chandni and Xiaogang to study seizure mechanisms in a mouse model of Focal Cortical Dysplasia.

Jan 13, 2025 - Visiting Scholar joins the lab
We are honored to welcome our first visiting scholar, Xiaogang Zhang, to the Mattis lab! Dr. Zhang is a physician scientist from China, where he holds a title of Associate Chief Physician and Associate Chief Physician Deputy Director in the Department of Neurology at Chongqing General Hospital, Chongqing University. He brings clinical and research expertise in epilepsy to the lab, and we are thrilled to have him join the team for a year. Welcome, Xiaogang!
